So, what is Megacon?

Megacon (short for "Mega Convention") is a large convention catering to anime, sci-fi, and comic books, held every Spring in Central Florida. The convention takes place in the Orange County Convention Center on International Drive.

Within the Months of February and March, Megacon attracts a variety of people, from all over the U.S. including Star Wars fans, Star Trek fans, Anime Fanatics of all genres, Japanese Culture lovers, various Video-gamers and Pop Culture geeks.

Idols relating to the convention's varied themes generally arrive as guests to the convention (Voice actors, famous cosplayers, Japanese tribute bands, comic book artists, etc). As well as amateur cosplayers (fans that make/buy costumes of their favorite characters and spend their days at the convention portraying them.) who occasionally gain regional fandom or online press through personal websites and social networking accounts.

What to Expect When Walking into Megacon for the First Time.

  • A variety of costumes and cosplays from a different anime, comic books, video games, and sci-fi works, as well as a variety of pop culture phenomenon, seemingly random objects and popular symbols.
  • Yaoi fans: A group that usually consists of young women (but has its persistent, male followers as well,) yaoi fans are always trying to find ways to lure the innocent into pairing usually straight male characters together, to perform homoerotic acts in front of them. In all seriousness, though, yaoi lovers support male-on-male pairings and constantly read doujinshi, fanfiction and draw/buy fanart. Expect yaoi fans to shriek and squeal upon seeing two guys kiss or a man in a dress. You will probably see more yaoi fans than those of the yuri genre.
  • "Glomps": No, this is not a monster, a tv show, or a rare disease contracted in the midst of the deepest, darkest jungle. A glomp is most simply, an overenthusiastic (and occasionally unwanted) hug that is given to expecting, as well as unsuspecting, victims. Glomps are usually given by young girls and anime fans.
  • Cross-dressers. The act of con-attendees cross-dressing may come as a surprise to some, while others may simply have suspected it. Expect to see a few male-on-male kisses at Megacon, as well the prettier variety of men "dressing their best". When you got it, flaunt it.
  • Ravers and various forms of techno music: At Megacon, it is not odd to see Jay and Silent Bob, raving with their stereo out the open. In fact, at Megacon, it is not odd to see people wearing nothing but neon colors and dread locks while listening to music cranked up so loud, that you can hear it twenty feet away. On Saturday night, be prepared for Megacon's rave and a few string-bikinis.
  • The Caramelldansen: If the word Caramelldansen(See video) means nothing to you, you probably have not heard the Swedish song that has been playing at conventions ruthlessly for the past few years. Caramelldansen is high-pitched song with an "Aqua" quality to it. A group of people will typically start bouncing back and forth with their hands on their heads, in a only-slightly-creepy con ritual.
  • The occasional "bigger women" in costumes, that given the small size, they should not be wearing. It happens.
  • People having fun! It's a convention! As geeky/nerdy as the word "convention" may sound to someone who has never attended one before, conventions are a lot of fun and tend to have something for everyone that attends!
